About Turf Maintenance
Contrary to popular belief, synthetic turf is not maintenance free. While it does require less care than natural grass or sod, regular synthetic turf maintenance should include:
- Brushing
- Vacuuming
- De-compacting
- Debris removal
- Sanitizing
- Treatment for weeds and pests
According to the Synthetic Turf Council, in order to extend the longevity of an infilled synthetic playing surface, proper maintenance is essential. Normal maintenance of an infilled synthetic surface is recommended according to the following guidelines:
- Daily: Monitor the distribution and condition of the playing surface.
- Weekly: Brush and possibly vacuum the playing field to redistribute the infill, maintain vertical fibers, and a level playing field.
- Monthly: Check infill levels, seams, inlaid lines, etc., and report failures (if any) to the manufacturer. Also check for over compaction and de-compact as may be necessary.
- Periodically: At least once a year a full grooming session should take place brushing (rotating unit), vacuuming, de-compacting, and grooming (static brush). Top dress with new infill may be required.
